Meat Free Monday – Vegan Cheesy Garlic Breadsticks

  • 1 Tbsp yeast
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 240ml warm water
  • 1/2 small white onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp garlic, diced
  • 190g Plain Flour
  • 4 Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • Pinch of black pepper


  1. Mix the yeast and the sugar in a bowl and add in the warm water and mix. Allow to rest (Prove) for 20mins it is ready when the mixture has a froth on the surface.
  2. Lightly fry the onion and the garlic until the onion loses its colour.
  3. Add the onion and garlic to the yeast mixture and mix.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix into a dough.
  5. Knead the dough until it is soft and can be stretched without breaking.
  6. Divide into 18 skinny sticks.
  7. Place on grease proof paper and leave to prove again in a warm place (like a hot press or a warm oven). In around 30 minutes they should have doubled in size.
  8. Preheat the oven to 200°C and bake for 10 minutes until golden brown.
