Fruity Friday 1 – Apples

As another addition to my blog, I will be doing a “Fruity Friday”. A lot of people know about 5 a day but the fruit is often overlooked and people opt for vegetables to meet this target. So every Friday I will be uploading a blog which looks at the benefits of fruits and why we need to incorporate more of them into our diet.

  1. Apples lower cholesterol. One medium-sized apple contains about four grams of fibre. Something we are seriously lacking in our diets! Some of this fibre is in the form of pectin, which is a soluble fibre linked to lower levels of low-density lipids or LDL by preventing it being absorbed.
  2. Apples provide satiety for longer without a lot of calories. As fibre does not contain calories and that is the main component of apples they come in low on the calorie scale at only 95cal in a medium apple.
  3. Ursolic acid is found in the skin of an apple. This has been used in a study with mice and has been shown to boost calorie burn and increase muscle and brown fat. Meaning apples may be apple to keep you slim. Ursolic acid is also found in rosemary and thyme.
  4. The skin of an apple also contains an antioxidant called quercetin which is linked to better lung function. Studies have shown that women who eat plenty of apples are less likely to have children with asthma.
  5. Quercetin fights the natural process of “oxidation” that takes place over time as we age. Quercetin can help stop free radicals, which negatively impact how cells work — including damaging cell membranes, changing the way DNA works, increasing cell mutations and causing healthy cells to die. So apples can keep us younger!
  6. Apples are good for your immune system. 1 apple contains 14% of your RDA of vitamin C.
  7. Apples may play a part in fighting cancer. In 2007 it was discovered that apples contain compounds called triterpenoids, which have been shown to fight against liver, colon and breast cancer.
  8. Apples contain anthocyanins which have been linked to a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  9. Apples encourage the body’s production of acetylcholine production which communicates with nerve cells helping your memory and lowering your chances of developing Alzheimer’s
